The CO of a Field Company regarded a casualty rate of 10% as expensive, because skilled men were hard to replace. The 102nd Field Company's casualty roll is typical; by 1917 they were operating in the Ypres Salient, where all of their combat casualties were from shell fire. The proportion of deaths was much higher than during the Loos or Somme offensives, because the Salient provided no relatively 'safe' rear areas for the men to work in. The 102nd's Western Front casualty roll stops abruptly after October, when the entire 23rd Division was moved to the Italian Front.
