Royal Engineer Field Companies on the Western Front, 1914-18.

This site commemorates the service of the Field Companies of the Royal Engineers (RE), on the Western Front.  The objective  is to share and gather information on the history of these units, and their members, both casualties and survivors.

In the Great War, RE Field Companies comprised about 230 officers, NCOs, and Sappers. They often worked close to the front line, building tracks, front line strongpoints, trench systems, wire emplacements, communications, and water supplies. They also developed new weapons systems and tactics, both defensive and offensive, and participated in trench raids and attacks.

In 1914 there were 15 RE Field Companies on the Western Front; by 1918, there were 159. They were horse-drawn, with mounted and dismounted sections. Each Company was divided into four sections for active duty.
